Any time you do something that’s powered by fossil fuels or use something that’s made with oil, you're contributing to a larger carbon footprint.

Fossil fuel use is such a threat to the environment, a major focus of going green and Earth Day is reducing carbon footprints. How can you do this without having to completely change your life around?

There are lots of simple things you can do, including biking instead of driving, using less energy around the house, turning off lights, replacing older appliances with energy-efficient ones, cutting down on plastic use, installing a programmable thermostat, and replacing old light bulbs with LEDs or CFLs.

Focusing on Green: Best Tips for Around the House

1. Save water: There are so many easy ways you can reduce household water use that there are too many to list here today. Instead, we’ll just go over the most significant ones.

First, replace your older toilets with modern low-flow versions. You'll save more than 5 gallons of water per flush.

Next, replace older faucets with water-efficient motion-activated ones, and you'll cut your water use from the taps by over 30 percent. Lastly, upgrade to low-flow shower heads and you'll save around 25 gallons of water per five-minute shower.

2. Cut the bottles: The bottled water industry is a hugely resource-intensive one, and you can drastically reduce your carbon footprint by refusing to buy bottles.

First of all, most bottled water is just filtered tap water anyway, so you can save money, cut out the middle step, and save tons of pollution and fossil fuels by installing a water filtration system in your house.

Plastic water bottles need millions of barrels of oil each year for production, and most of those bottles don’t even get recycled. Instead, they end up in landfills, where they’ll take a thousand years to break down.

3. Go Tankless: Energy-efficient tankless water heaters are far superior to conventional storage-tank heaters. Not only will they save you tons of energy, but you'll also end up with more money in your pocket with every energy bill you get.

  • There's no energy wasted through standby loss, which accounts for about 20 percent of the energy that conventional water heaters use
  • They use about 30 percent less energy to operate
  • They produce hot water on demand, so you'll never run out
  • They're more efficient because they don’t waste energy keeping a tankful of water hot
  • They last about twice as long as conventional water heaters (20 years versus 10)
  • Their extended lifespan means even more money saved and less waste in the landfills
