7 Tips to Prepare Your Home for the Fall

Fall is a magical time of year. We get a break from the heat of summer, and as the leaves change color, we’re reminded that the year is almost over. Fall is also the time of year where many homeowners take the opportunity to complete a checklist of to-do items to prepare for the fall and winter ahead.

Here are seven tips to prepare your home this fall:

1. Clean Your Gutters and Drainage Pipes

Over the summer and early fall, your gutters and drainage pipes will become clogged with debris, leaves, branches and more. Cleaning your gutters and drainage pipes in the fall will prevent blockages and allow precipitation to flow freely and move away from your home.

2. Remove All Outdoor Hoses

While the temperature is never truly freezing cold in Conroe, it’s still a good idea to remove outdoor hoses and disconnect your outdoor taps and faucets. It still gets chilly overnight and the frost may damage these components.

3. Insulate Outdoor Pipes to Prevent Damage

If you have any pipes that are exposed to the outdoors, it’s a good idea to insulate them just in case. While the average temperature is not enough to freeze a pipe, we may experience an unexpected cold snap that could cause damage. In these cases, it’s better to be safe than sorry.

4. Invest in Drain Cleaning

With the approaching holidays, you are probably expecting to prepare many meals and serve many people at your home. This means that there may be excess food, grease and oil that may make its way into your drains. Invest in drain cleaning during the fall, before the holidays, to make sure your drains are sparkly clean and ready to handle the load, come December.

5. Schedule Water Heater Maintenance

With professional water heater maintenance, we can easily spot any issues and prevent unexpected repairs. We can also ensure your water heater is working efficiently to save you money over the winter.

6. Invest in a Sump Pump Inspection

Fall and winter come with increased precipitation, which means you will be relying on your sump pump more than usual. If your sump pump spends most of the year in standby mode, it’s a good idea to invest in an inspection in the fall. This way, you will rest easy knowing your sump pump has you covered all winter long.

7. Get Your Septic Tank Emptied

If you rely on a septic tank for your waste rather than city sewer lines, it’s recommended to get your septic tank cleaned before winter. Although the temperatures don’t go too low in the area, the ground may still have some frost in it, making it difficult to dig if you experience sewer line problems in the winter. If your sewer line is coming close to being due for a cleaning, get it done in the fall before it gets cold.
